Rat Embryos

Rat embryos are developing rat organisms from fertilization through birth, providing a mammalian system for studying how a single-cell zygote forms organized tissues and organs. After fertilization, repeated mitotic cleavage produces a blastocyst; implantation in the uterus is followed by gastrulation, when cell movements establish the germ layers that generate the body plan, and by organogenesis. Researchers examine rat embryos to investigate gene function, cell differentiation, congenital abnormalities, maternal-fetal interactions, and responses to drugs or environmental exposures. Their relatively large size and established reproductive biology also support experimental imaging, embryo culture, and developmental toxicology, linking cellular mechanisms to mammalian health.

Mammalian whole embryo culture (WEC) is widely used in teratology and developmental biology. Immediately centrifuged rat serum is commonly provided as a medium for both mouse and rat WEC. In this video, we demonstrate our standard protocol for the preparation of high-quality rat serum suitable for mammalian WEC.
