Ricordi Digestion Chamber

The Ricordi digestion chamber is a specialized device used to dissociate pancreatic tissue and isolate insulin-producing islets for biological research and transplantation studies. During the procedure, collagenase solution perfuses the tissue while controlled temperature, fluid flow, and gentle mechanical agitation promote enzymatic breakdown of the extracellular matrix and release intact islets. Researchers then separate and assess the islets for viability, purity, insulin secretion, and suitability for culture or transplantation. This method has supported studies of pancreatic function, diabetes pathophysiology, and cell-based therapies, while chamber conditions can influence digestion efficiency and the quality of the recovered islet preparation.

Chambers of the Heart

2025

The human heart is a complex organ made up of four chambers: the right and left atria and the right and left ventricles. These internal chambers are separated by partitions known as the interatrial and interventricular septa. The exterior of the heart features a groove known as the coronary sulcus that demarcates the atria from the ventricles, while the anterior and posterior interventricular sulci distinguish between the two ventricles. Deoxygenated blood from the body is received in the right...

Digital Microfluidics is a technique characterized by the manipulation of discrete droplets (~nL - mL) on an array of electrodes by the application of electrical fields. It is well-suited for carrying out rapid, sequential, miniaturized automated biochemical assays. Here, we report a platform capable of automating several proteomic processing steps.
