Silicon Micro Wells

Silicon micro wells are miniaturized, regularly patterned cavities fabricated in silicon to isolate and organize biological cells or small samples, enabling controlled experiments at microscale. Their geometry physically confines cells and reagents, while differences in well size, depth, and surface properties influence cell positioning, contact, aggregation, and exposure to soluble factors. In biology, these structures support single-cell handling, clonal growth, spheroid formation, and localized drug or toxicity assays. Because many wells can be analyzed in parallel, silicon micro wells help standardize microscale cultures, reduce sample use, and generate reproducible measurements for cell behavior, disease modeling, and biomedical research.

This manuscript shows the fabrication process for the manufacture of dielectric elastomer soft actuators based on silicone membranes. The three key stages of production are presented in detail: blade casting of thin silicone membranes; pad printing of compliant electrodes; and the assembly of all the components.

Fabrication of a Master Mold for Microneedles with a Micron-sized Air-vent Hole

2025

This article introduces a unique method for fabricating master molds with an air-vent hole to prevent air entrapment during viscous polymer casting, enabling the fabrication of gelatin microneedles with sharp tips. By reducing the casting volume of high-viscosity gelatin, thin-walled hollow pyramidal microneedles could also be fabricated.

We used synchrotron X-ray tomography at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) to non-invasively produce 3D tomographic datasets with a pixel-resolution of 0.7µm. Using volume rendering software, this allows the reconstruction of internal structures in their natural state without the artefacts produced by histological sectioning.
