Silicone Oil Bath

A silicone oil bath is a laboratory heating system that uses temperature-controlled silicone oil to warm biological samples, reaction vessels, or apparatus uniformly. Heat moves from a heated vessel through the oil and into immersed containers, allowing stable incubation at temperatures above the practical range of water baths while reducing direct contact with a heating element. In biology, silicone oil baths support controlled heating for sample preparation, biochemical reactions, and other experiments requiring consistent elevated temperatures. Their broad operating range and even heat transfer can improve temperature reproducibility, but careful monitoring and compatible containers are essential for safe use.

Improved Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) Double Casting via Silicone Oil Treatment for Densely Packed Microstructure Replication

2025

This protocol presents an improved demolding procedure for the Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) double casting technique by introducing silicone oil as a non-adhesive barrier between PDMS layers. Unlike plasma or chemical surface modification methods, this approach requires no specialized or costly equipment, making it a more accessible and cost-effective alternative.
