Slow Responses

Slow responses are biological reactions that develop over seconds to days because they depend on multistep signaling and cellular changes rather than immediate electrical activity. In many systems, a stimulus activates receptors and intracellular signaling pathways that alter gene transcription, protein synthesis, metabolism, or long-term cell behavior; endocrine hormones commonly produce this pattern. Slow responses help organisms regulate growth, development, stress adaptation, immune activity, and physiological balance. Studying these processes clarifies how cells convert external information into sustained changes and supports research into hormone action, disease mechanisms, drug responses, and therapies that modify long-term biological regulation.

Gene Evolution - Fast or Slow?

2023

The genomes of eukaryotes are punctuated by long stretches of sequence which do not code for proteins or RNAs. Although some of these regions do contain crucial regulatory sequences, the vast majority of this DNA serves no known function. Typically, these regions of the genome are the ones in which the fastest change, in evolutionary terms, is observed, because there is typically little to no selection pressure acting on these regions to preserve their sequences. In contrast, regions which code...

2012

Use of photonic crystal slow light waveguides and cavities has been widely adopted by the photonics community in many differing applications. Therefore fabrication and characterization of these devices are of great interest. This paper outlines our fabrication technique and two optical characterization methods, namely: interferometric (waveguides) and resonant scattering (cavities).

Obtaining Specimens with Slowed, Accelerated and Reversed Aging in the Honey Bee Model

In honey bee workers, aging depends on social behaviors rather than on chronological age. Here we show how worker-types with very different aging patterns can be obtained and analyzed for cellular senescence.
