Somatic Niche Cells

Somatic niche cells are non-germline cells that create the local microenvironment supporting stem cells and progenitors within a tissue. Through direct cell contact and secretion of signaling molecules, extracellular matrix components, and growth factors, they regulate stem-cell survival, quiescence, self-renewal, and differentiation; these signals can change with tissue injury or physiological demand. Studying somatic niche cells helps explain how tissue architecture maintains homeostasis and initiates repair after damage. In biology and regenerative research, characterizing these cells can guide organoid design, improve stem-cell culture systems, and identify cellular interactions or signaling pathways altered in disease.

Tissue Regeneration with Somatic Stem Cells

2023

Somatic or adult stem cells, like embryonic stem cells, are capable of self-renewal but demonstrate a restricted differentiation potential. Nonetheless, these cells are crucial to homeostatic processes and play an important role in tissue repair. By studying and manipulating this cell population, scientist may be able to develop new regenerative therapies for injuries and diseases. This video first defines somatic stem cells, and then explores the role these cells play in tissue regeneration.

Stem Cell Niche

2023

The stem cell niche is the dynamic microenvironment where stem cells reside. Inside these niches, the cells may remain undifferentiated, undergo high self-renewal, or become lineage-specific progenitors. Stem cells coexist with other niche cells, such as stromal cells. They also interact closely with the ECM. Cell-cell and cell-matrix communication occur via adhesion molecules or soluble factors that signal the stem cells and determine their fate. Stromal cells also provide survival signals to...

A Simple Microaspiration Technique for Isolating Somatic Cells from Cryopreserved Equine Semen as Nuclear Donors for Cloning

2025

This protocol presents a simple microaspiration technique to isolate viable somatic cells (SCs) from cryopreserved equine semen. Unlike traditional approaches, this technique avoids long in vitro cultures and overcomes sperm contamination, enabling immediate use in somatic cell cloning.
