Stable Integration

Stable integration is the durable incorporation of foreign genetic material into a cell’s genome, allowing the inserted sequence to persist through cell division and, in some organisms, inheritance. In biology, it typically occurs when engineered DNA enters a nucleus and becomes inserted through processes such as homologous recombination, transposon-mediated insertion, or viral-vector integration, followed by selection of cells that retain the construct. Researchers use stable integration to create cell lines and model organisms with consistent gene expression for studying gene function, disease mechanisms, and drug responses. It also supports biotechnology and gene therapy research, although insertion site and copy number can influence outcomes.

The Seemingly Stable Trade‐Off

The short-run Phillips curve shows the relationship between the inflation rate and the unemployment rate.During the 1960s, economists observed that this relationship seemed to hold consistently. When unemployment was low, inflation tended to be high, and when unemployment was high, inflation tended to be low.Policymakers at the time interpreted this relationship as a necessary trade-off between unemployment and inflation. They thought they could reduce unemployment only by allowing higher...

(2016)This video demonstrates stable genetic modification of neural stem cells (NSCs) in the ventricular-subventricular zone (V-SVZ) through stereotaxic injection of a virus-carrying therapeutic gene in a mouse model. The virus enters NSCs, undergoes reverse transcription, integrates into the genome, and...

Integration by Parts: Indefinite Integrals

Integration by parts is a fundamental technique in calculus for evaluating integrals involving the product of two functions. It is particularly useful when direct integration is not feasible. The method is based on the product rule for differentiation, which states that the derivative of a product equals the derivative of the first function times the second, plus the first function times the derivative of the second. By integrating this identity and rearranging terms, the integration by parts...
