Starch Glycogen

Starch and glycogen are glucose-storage polysaccharides that temporarily package chemical energy in living organisms. Starch, the primary storage carbohydrate in plants, contains relatively linear amylose and branched amylopectin, whereas glycogen, common in animals and fungi, has a more extensively branched structure; enzymes build and break their glycosidic bonds to store glucose or release it for metabolism. Their contrasting structures influence how quickly glucose becomes available, with glycogen supporting rapid energy mobilization and starch providing longer-term plant reserves. Comparing starch and glycogen helps explain carbohydrate metabolism, cellular energy balance, nutrition, and the evolutionary adaptations of plants, animals, and fungi.

2016

In this study, a protocol was developed to produce good quality pellets using a flat die pellet mill at reduced specific energy consumption testing high-moisture corn stover and a starch based binder. The results indicated that adding a corn starch binder improved the pellet durability, reduced percent fines and decreased specific energy consumption.

Presented here is a procedure for reproducible and statistically valid determinations of starch granule size distributions, and for specifying the determined granule lognormal size distributions using a two-parameter multiplicative form. It is applicable to all granule sizing analyses of gram-scale starch samples for plant and food science research.

This protocol describes a high through put colorimetric method that relies on the formation of a complex between iodine and chains of glucose molecules in starch. Iodine forms complexes with both amylose and long chains within amylopectin. After the addition of iodine to a starch sample, the maximum absorption of amylose and amylopectin occurs at 620 and 550 nm, respectively. The amylose/amylopectin ratio can be estimated from the ratio of the 620 and 550 nm absorbance values and comparing them...

Biomolecules Organisms contain a wide variety of organic molecules with numerous functions which depend on the chemical structures and properties of these molecules. All organic molecules contain a carbon backbone and hydrogen atoms. The carbon atom is central in the formation of a vast variety of organic molecules ranging in size, shape and complexity; inorganic molecules on the other hand, generally have simpler structures. The outermost shell of a free carbon atom can accommodate eight...
