Sypro Ruby

SYPRO Ruby is a fluorescent protein stain used after polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to visualize and compare separated proteins with high sensitivity. Its ruthenium-based fluorophore interacts with proteins in the gel, and ultraviolet or blue-light excitation produces red fluorescence whose intensity reflects the relative amount of stained protein under standardized conditions. In biology, SYPRO Ruby supports one-dimensional and two-dimensional PAGE, differential protein-pattern analysis, and spot selection for downstream identification by mass spectrometry. Its broad dynamic range and compatibility with subsequent analysis make it useful for proteomics and biochemical research.

2012

Microbial eukaryotes are both a source of photosynthetically-derived carbon and top predatory species in permanently ice-covered Antarctic lakes. This report describes an enrichment culture approach to isolate metabolically versatile microbial eukaryotes from the Antarctic lake, Lake Bonney, and assesses inorganic carbon fixation potential using a radioisotope assay for Ribulose-1,5-bisphophate carboxylase oxygenase (RubisCO) activity.
