Tertiary Neurons

Tertiary neurons, also called third-order neurons, are relay cells that carry sensory information from the thalamus to the cerebral cortex, where the brain interprets incoming signals. In many sensory pathways, a primary neuron detects a stimulus and synapses with a secondary neuron, which projects to the thalamus; the tertiary neuron then transmits the processed signal through thalamocortical projections to a specific cortical region. Studying tertiary neurons helps explain how touch, pain, temperature, and other sensations reach conscious awareness. Their organization is also important for interpreting neurological deficits caused by lesions in the thalamus, cortex, or connecting pathways.

Specialized care provided over an extended period is called tertiary care. Usually, a primary or secondary care physician will refer a patient to tertiary care. A patient's maximum physical and mental function is restored in tertiary care, which is caused due to the impact of a chronic illness or condition. Tertiary care aims to achieve the highest level of functioning possible while managing chronic illness. For example, a patient who falls and fractures their hip will need secondary care to...

Nomenclature of Secondary and Tertiary Amines

2025

The secondary and tertiary amines are derivatives of ammonia, where two and three of its hydrogens are replaced by alkyl groups, respectively. Secondary and tertiary amines can be symmetrical with identical alkyl groups attached to the nitrogen atom or unsymmetrical when more than one type of alkyl group is present. The standard nomenclature of secondary and tertiary amines is similar to the names given to the primary amines. They are generally named alkylamines. As depicted in Figure 1, for...

Peptide tertiary amides (PTAs) are a superfamily of peptidomimetics that include but are not limited to peptides, peptoids and N-methylated peptides. Here we describe a synthetic method which combines both split-and-pool and sub-monomer strategies to synthesize a one-bead one-compound library of PTAs.

We have developed a computer program to analyze neuronal morphology. In combination with two existing open source analysis tools, our program performs Sholl analysis and determines the number of neurites, branch points, and neurite tips. The analyses are performed so that local changes in neurite morphology can be observed.
