Tissue Function

Tissue function refers to the specialized activities performed by organized groups of cells, together with their extracellular matrix, to support an organism’s structure, regulation, and survival. Cells within a tissue communicate through chemical signals, direct contacts, and mechanical interactions, coordinating processes such as contraction, secretion, barrier formation, transport, or structural support. In biology, understanding tissue function connects cellular behavior with organ performance and whole-body homeostasis. This knowledge supports research on development, regeneration, disease, and injury by revealing how altered cell interactions or tissue organization can impair physiological function and how targeted interventions may restore it.

Epithelial Tissues and Their Functions

2025

Epithelial tissues are large sheets of cells covering all of the surfaces of the body. These surfaces can be internal or external, for example, skin, airways, the digestive tract, the urinary system, and the reproductive system. Hollow organs and body cavities that do not connect to the body's exterior, including blood vessels and serous membranes, are lined by epithelial tissue known as the endothelium. Epithelial tissues provide the body's first line of protection from physical, chemical, and...

Functions of Connective Tissues

2025

Connective tissues perform a broad range of functions in the body. Their primary function is to connect and link different tissues in the body and act as packaging material between tissues. The areolar tissue, a connective tissue prototype, commonly cements various tissue types in diverse body organs. In contrast, adipose tissue cushions internal organs while insulating the body from heat loss. Hard connective tissues, such as bones and cartilage, provide structure and support to the body.

Extraction of Tissue Antigens for Functional Assays

2012

A simple protocol for preparing extracts of human tissue to be used as a source of antigens in functional T-cell assays is described. This method allows T-cell responses to tissue-derived antigens to be measured in vitro.
