Wound Healing Assay

Wound healing assays are in vitro methods used to measure how cells repair a defined gap, providing a simple model of tissue regeneration and collective cell behavior. Typically, researchers grow cells to confluence, create a linear scratch in the monolayer, and monitor gap closure over time through coordinated cell migration and proliferation. Image-based measurements quantify the remaining wound area or closure rate under controlled conditions. In biology, these assays help evaluate how growth factors, extracellular matrix components, drugs, or genetic changes influence repair processes, although results should be interpreted alongside approaches that distinguish migration from proliferation.
