Z Disc

The Z disc is a protein-rich structure that marks each boundary of a sarcomere, the basic contractile unit of striated muscle, and organizes the alignment of myofilaments. It anchors the barbed ends of actin thin filaments and connects with titin, while neighboring Z discs define the repeating arrangement required for coordinated contraction. When myosin pulls actin toward the sarcomere center, tension passes through the Z discs and contributes to force transmission along the muscle fiber. Studying Z disc structure helps explain muscle architecture, mechanical stability, and the cellular basis of inherited and acquired myopathies.

Cited by 13 •

2012

The generation, purification and cell invasion of intracellular, cytoplasmic full length DISC1 protein aggresomes from cell cultures and of a labeled, multimeric recombinant DISC1 protein fragment in E. coli are described. Cell invasiveness is shown for recipient cells in cell culture and for neurons in vivo after stereotactical brain inoculation.

An Introduction to Modeling Behavioral Disorders and Stress

2023

Recently, it has been discovered that behavioral conditions such as, depression, anxiety and stress-response have a neurological basis. Understanding the biological underpinnings of these conditions may help scientists in developing more effective therapies to treat these disorders. Typically, rodent models are used in this field and behavioral scientists create these models using interventions like drug administration or surgery. It is important to understand how to create and evaluate rodent...

In Situ Measurement of Vacuum Window Birefringence using 25Mg+ Fluorescence

2020

Presented here is a method to measure the birefringence of vacuum windows by maximizing the fluorescence counts emitted by Doppler cooled 25Mg+ ions in an ion trap. The birefringence of vacuum windows will change the polarization states of the laser, which can be compensated by changing the azimuthal angles of external wave plates.

High-precision Electromagnetic Flowmeter with Empty Pipe Detection via Complex Programmable Logic Device-based Waveform Recognition
