Body Fluid Analysis

Body fluid analysis is the examination of fluids such as blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, or ascites to measure cellular, biochemical, and molecular features relevant to health and disease. In cancer research, samples are processed by steps such as centrifugation and filtration, then analyzed with microscopy, immunoassays, flow cytometry, or nucleic acid testing to identify abnormal cells, proteins, metabolites, or circulating tumor DNA. These measurements can support cancer detection, classification, treatment monitoring, and evaluation of disease progression. Because collection is often minimally invasive, body fluid analysis also contributes to liquid biopsy research and the development of personalized diagnostic strategies.

Water functions as a solvent accommodating various solutes, which can be categorized under electrolytes and non-electrolytes. Non-electrolytes are usually held together by covalent bonds, restricting them from dissociating in solution, thereby leading to a lack of electrically charged components upon dissolving in water. They are predominantly organic molecules, such as glucose, creatinine, and urea. Electrolytes, on the other hand, are compounds that can break down into ions in water.

Life's biochemical processes occur within aqueous solutions. Solutes are substances that are dissolved within these solutions. The human body contains a variety of solutes, which can differ across various body parts. These can encompass proteins—such as those responsible for clotting and carbohydrate transport—as well as electrolytes. In medicine, an electrolyte is often described as a mineral ion derived from a salt possessing an electric charge. Examples include sodium ions (Na+) and chloride...

A method for mass spectrometric analysis of endogenous peptides in human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is presented. By employing molecular weight cut-off filtration, chromatographic pre-fractionation, mass spectrometric analysis and a subsequent combination of peptide identification strategies, it was possible to expand the known CSF peptidome nearly ten-fold compared to previous studies.
