Cecum Exteriorization

Cecum exteriorization is a surgical technique that temporarily brings the cecum outside the abdominal cavity, providing direct access to this intestinal segment for controlled experimental procedures. Through a carefully performed abdominal incision, researchers gently mobilize the cecum while preserving its vascular connections, manipulate or examine the tissue, and then return it to its normal position before closing the incision. In cancer research, this approach supports reproducible access to cecal tissue for localized interventions, sampling, and evaluation of tissue responses. Standardized handling can improve model consistency while helping investigators study gastrointestinal tumor biology, treatment effects, and disease-associated changes.

This article describes a simple model for stimulating angiogenesis in the rat mesentery. The model produces dramatic increases in capillary sprouting, vascular area and vascular density over a relatively short time course in a tissue that allows en face visualization of entire microvascular networks down to the single cell level.

This protocol describes a rat-based intestinal transplantation model with ileostomy for time-course assessment of drug intervention on graft rejection.

Intracecal Tumor Cell Injection: A Technique to Deliver Cancer Cells for Establishing Orthotopic Colorectal Cancer Mouse Model

2023

The video describes the technique for intracecal injection of cancerous cells to develop an orthotopic mouse model with highly uniform tumors. Therefore, the orthotopic mouse model allows realistic simulation of metastasis, providing a valuable tool to study the phenotype changes during tumor growth and dissemination.

We describe the establishment of orthotopic colorectal tumors via injection of tumor cells or organoids into the cecum of mice and the subsequent isolation of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from this model.

Generation of Mouse Proximal Colon Loop Model: A Surgical Procedure to Generate Proximal Colon Loop and Measure Intestinal Permeability by Detection of Fluorescent Markers in Serum Following Intraluminal Injection
