Peritoneal Lavage Fluid

Peritoneal lavage fluid is liquid recovered after washing the peritoneal cavity, providing a sample of cells and soluble materials from the abdominal surface. During collection, sterile saline or another lavage solution is introduced into the cavity, circulated, and withdrawn; the recovered fluid can then undergo cytological examination, cell analysis, or molecular testing for malignant cells and cancer-associated biomarkers. In cancer research, peritoneal lavage fluid supports detection of microscopic tumor spread, evaluation of peritoneal dissemination, and assessment of treatment response. Its analysis can complement tissue biopsy and imaging, helping clarify disease stage and guide investigations of abdominal cancers.

Peritoneal Low-density Neutrophil Isolation: A Technique to Obtain Low-density Neutrophils from Peritoneal Lavage Fluid Using Magnetic Activated Cell Sorting

2023

In this video, we describe the procedure for isolating low-density neutrophils, or LDNs, from the peritoneal lavage fluid of a postoperative human patient. The LDNs thus obtained can be used in further downstream experiments to understand their role in tumor growth and progression.

Identification and Enumeration of Immune Cells in Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluid by Flow Cytometry

This video demonstrates the use of flow cytometry to identify and count various immune cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Initially, single immune cells are identified using a viability dye, followed by differential staining of surface marker proteins, enabling the precise enumeration of each cell type.

A Reversible, Non-invasive Method for Airway Resistance Measurements and Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluid Sampling in Mice

Repeated measurements of rodent respiratory physiology and sampling of airway inflammatory cells are desirable, but generally not feasible. Here we describe a repeatable method for orally intubating mice that permits repeated measurements of airway hyperreactivity and sampling of airway inflammatory cells.
