Submucosal Transplantation

Submucosal transplantation is a technique that places tumor cells, tissue fragments, or grafts beneath a mucosal lining, providing a localized model for studying cancer in tissue-relevant surroundings. During the procedure, the graft is introduced into the submucosal layer, where it can engraft and interact with adjacent epithelial, stromal, vascular, and immune compartments; these interactions influence tumor growth, invasion, and treatment response. In cancer research, this approach can model local tumor development, particularly in mucosa-associated sites such as the oral cavity or gastrointestinal tract, while supporting analysis of tumor–microenvironment relationships and evaluation of anticancer therapies.
