Treatment Combination Studies

Treatment combination studies are systematic investigations of how two or more therapeutic interventions work together, helping researchers determine whether combined treatment improves outcomes beyond a single therapy. In cancer research, investigators vary drug selection, dose, sequence, and timing, then measure interactions such as synergy, additivity, or antagonism in tumor cells, models, or clinical settings. These studies can reveal complementary mechanisms, identify combinations that overcome treatment resistance, and clarify how efficacy relates to toxicity. Their findings support rational therapy design, biomarker development, and the translation of promising combinations into more effective, personalized cancer treatment strategies.

An In Vitro Technique to Study Antimicrobial Treatments on Bacterial Aggregates

2025

This video demonstrates an in vitro technique to study the impact of antimicrobial treatment on Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) aggregates. Fluorescently-labeled Pa cells are grown as aggregates, mimicking the growth pattern during infection. Upon challenging the aggregates with a sublethal concentration of the antibiotic colistin, the real-time assessment of the bacteria-antibiotic interaction is performed via fluorescence microscopy.

Combination of High Ligation and Intraoperative Embolization Using Polidocanol for Treatment of Varicoceles

2023

To reduce the postoperative recurrence rate of varicocelectomy, we combined high ligation of varicocele with intraoperative embolization. We injected polidocanol from the spermatic vein during surgery to embolize the branches of the spermatic vein and collateral veins. This is an alternative surgical method for the treatment of varicocele.

Olfactory Neurons Obtained through Nasal Biopsy Combined with Laser-Capture Microdissection: A Potential Approach to Study Treatment Response in Mental Disorders

In this study, a novel platform to investigate intraneuronal molecular signatures of treatment response in bipolar disorder (BD) was developed and validated. Olfactory epithelium from BD patients was obtained through nasal biopsies. Then laser-capture microdissection was combined with Real Time RT PCR to investigate the molecular signature of lithium response in BD.

Pancreatic cancer stem cells (CSCs) can be expanded in vitro using the anchorage-independent sphere culture technique, which represents a powerful tool to study CSC biology and can serve as the first step to develop novel CSC-targeting therapies. Here the methodology for expanding, analyzing and targeting of pancreatic CSCs is provided.
