Purity Determination

Purity determination is the chemical assessment of how much of a sample consists of the desired substance rather than impurities, making it essential for reliable identification, quality control, and quantitative results. Chemists determine purity by comparing measured physical or chemical properties with those expected for the pure compound, using techniques such as melting-point analysis, chromatography, spectroscopy, titration, or gravimetric analysis. These methods detect additional components, measure the amount of analyte, or reveal changes caused by contamination. Purity determination supports pharmaceutical manufacturing, analytical research, industrial quality assurance, and the preparation of materials with consistent composition and performance.

Here we describe a robust method of determining immune cell identity and purity through epigenetic signatures detected using quantitative PCR (qPCR). DNA demethylation at a specific locus serves as a unique identifier for a particular cell type and allows for identification of CD8+, regulatory, or Th17 T cells.

Photometric Protein Determination

2023

Measuring the concentration is a fundamental step of many biochemical assays. Photometric protein determination takes advantage of the fact that the more a sample contains light-absorbing substances, the less the light will transmit through it. Since the relationship between concentration and absorption is linear, this phenomenon can be used to measure the concentration in samples where it is unknown. This video describes the basics of photometric protein determination and introduces the...
