Deposition Rate

Deposition rate is the amount of material that accumulates on a surface per unit time, often expressed as a thickness change or mass gained per area. In chemical processing, it is governed by how rapidly reactants reach the substrate and are converted into a solid layer through processes such as precipitation, electrochemical reduction, or vapor-phase surface reactions. Temperature, pressure, reactant concentration, transport conditions, and applied current can therefore alter the rate and the resulting film thickness, composition, and uniformity. Measuring and controlling deposition rate helps optimize thin-film growth, electroplating, protective coatings, and materials fabrication, while providing insight into reaction kinetics and mass transfer in chemical systems.

Phase Transitions: Sublimation and Deposition

2020

Some solids can transition directly into the gaseous state, bypassing the liquid state, via a process known as sublimation. At room temperature and standard pressure, a piece of dry ice (solid CO2) sublimes, appearing to gradually disappear without ever forming any liquid. Snow and ice sublimate at temperatures below the melting point of water, a slow process that may be accelerated by winds and the reduced atmospheric pressures at high altitudes. When solid iodine is warmed, the solid sublimes...

This report describes the use of a custom-built system to perform aerosol deposition of thick films of yttrium iron garnet onto sapphire substrates at RT. The deposited films are characterized using scanning electron microscopy, profilometry, and ferromagnetic resonance to give a representative overview of the capabilities of the technique.

The rate of reaction is the change in the amount of a reactant or product per unit time. Reaction rates are therefore determined by measuring the time dependence of some property that can be related to reactant or product amounts. Rates of reactions that consume or produce gaseous substances, for example, are conveniently determined by measuring changes in volume or pressure. The mathematical representation of the change in the concentration of reactants and products, over time, is the rate...

We present the synthesis of the organic-based ferrimagnet vanadium tetracyanoethylene (V[TCNE]x, x~2) via low temperature chemical vapor deposition (CVD). This optimized recipe yields an increase in Curie temperature from 400 K to over 600 K and a dramatic improvement in magnetic resonance properties.
