Metal Complex Monomers

Metal complex monomers are molecules that combine a polymerizable organic group with a coordinated metal center, enabling metal-specific properties to become part of a polymeric material. During polymerization, the reactive monomer groups undergo chain-growth or step-growth reactions while the metal complex remains incorporated in the backbone or attached as a pendant functional unit, depending on its molecular design. This approach connects coordination chemistry with polymer science to produce materials with controlled electronic, optical, magnetic, catalytic, or redox behavior. Metal complex monomers therefore support the development of functional coatings, sensors, catalysts, electroactive materials, and other advanced polymers whose properties can be tuned through both ligand structure and metal selection.

Lipid polyesters constitute the structural components of two cell wall modifications, the plant cuticle and suberin-containing diffusion barriers. In this video, we describe a method to depolymerize cutin from whole delipidated leaves. The method can be applied to investigating mutants compromised in either cutin or suberin biosynthesis.
