Small Molecule Capture

Small molecule capture is the selective isolation or retention of low-molecular-weight compounds from complex mixtures, enabling their identification, purification, or analysis. It works by exploiting differences in molecular recognition, adsorption, affinity, solubility, or chemical reactivity between a target compound and a capture material, such as a receptor, sorbent, or functionalized surface. In chemistry, these strategies support sample preparation, separation science, analytical detection, and the screening of binding interactions. Small molecule capture can improve selectivity and sensitivity when target compounds occur at low concentrations, contributing to studies of reaction products, metabolites, pharmaceuticals, and environmental contaminants.

Atoms and Molecules Everything in the universe is made up of matter, and matter is composed of a combination of elements. An atom is the smallest unit of an element that retains all properties of the element. For example, a silver coin is made up of silver atoms, and each silver atom retains the unique properties of the element — silver. Elements are pure substances consisting of identical atoms that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical changes. Atomic elements contain...
