Abducens Nerve Testing

Abducens nerve testing is a clinical assessment of cranial nerve VI and the lateral rectus muscle, which abducts the eye and supports coordinated horizontal gaze. During examination, the patient follows a target through the horizontal and vertical positions of an H-pattern while the clinician observes eye movements, alignment, and symptoms such as diplopia; impaired outward movement may indicate abducens nerve dysfunction. The test helps localize neurological lesions, distinguish isolated sixth-nerve palsy from broader ocular motor disorders, and guide evaluation of conditions affecting the brainstem, cavernous sinus, orbit, or raised intracranial pressure. Findings can also support monitoring during recovery or treatment.

Chronic Constriction of the Sciatic Nerve and Pain Hypersensitivity Testing in Rats

Due to the simplicity of surgery and the robust behavioural outcome, chronic constriction of the sciatic nerve is one of the pre-eminent animal models of neuropathic pain. Within 24 hrs following surgery, pain hypersensitivity is established and can be quantitatively measured using a von Frey aesthesiometer (mechanical test) and plantar analgesia meter (thermal test).

In Vivo Biomechanical Testing of Nerve: A Procedure for Biomechanical Analysis of Brachial Plexus Nerve Injury in a Neonatal Pig Model

2025

In this video, we demonstrate the biomechanical testing of the brachial plexus nerve in a pig model to measure the threshold tensile strength of the nerve when subjected to stretching. This technique helps in determining the structural and mechanical properties of the nerve.

Testing Sensory Nerve Function in a Surgically Denervated Mouse Model

This video demonstrates testing sensory nerve function in a mouse model by surgically denervating one side and leaving the other as a control. The response to mechanical stimulation confirms the role of sensory nerves.

In Vivo Electrophysiological Measurement of the Rat Ulnar Nerve with Axonal Excitability Testing

Axonal excitability techniques provide a powerful tool to examine pathophysiology and biophysical changes that precede irreversible degenerative events. This manuscript demonstrates the use of these techniques on the ulnar nerve of anesthetized rats.

This article includes detailed protocols for genetic labeling of mouse skin, surgical denervation, skin biopsy and visualizing labeled epithelia by whole-mount β-galactosidase staining. These methods can be used to test the requirement for nerves in mouse models of normal and pathological skin.
