Neurology Oncology

Neurology oncology, often called neuro-oncology, is the clinical field focused on tumors affecting the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and their surrounding tissues. It combines neurological examination with magnetic resonance imaging, tissue pathology, and molecular profiling to identify tumor type, location, growth patterns, and effects on nervous-system function. These findings guide treatment decisions, including surgery, radiation therapy, systemic medicines, and supportive care, while accounting for risks to cognition, movement, sensation, and communication. The field also supports research into tumor biology, targeted therapies, biomarkers, and strategies that improve survival and quality of life for patients with primary or metastatic nervous-system cancers.
