Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is a group of disorders caused by damage or dysfunction in the peripheral nerves, which connect the brain and spinal cord with the rest of the body. Injury to sensory, motor, or autonomic nerve fibers can disrupt signal transmission through axonal degeneration, loss of myelin, or both, leading to numbness, pain, weakness, or impaired body functions. In clinical practice, evaluation may include neurological examination, laboratory testing, and electrodiagnostic studies to identify causes such as diabetes, toxins, medications, autoimmune disease, or inherited conditions. Accurate diagnosis guides treatment of the underlying cause, symptom control, and prevention of further nerve damage.

2025

This video demonstrates a method for establishing a small fiber neuropathy model in mice using the TRPV1 agonist resiniferatoxin (RTX). It outlines the steps involved in administering RTX to mice and explains how RTX induces neuronal death in small-diameter sensory neurons, thereby establishing the neuropathy model.

DefinitionDiabetic neuropathy is nerve damage caused by long-standing diabetes mellitus. It results directly from prolonged high blood sugar levels.PathophysiologyThe pathophysiology of diabetic neuropathy involves both metabolic and vascular disturbances triggered by chronic hyperglycemia.Metabolic injury: Elevated glucose levels activate the polyol pathway within nerve cells, leading to the accumulation of sorbitol and fructose. This increases oxidative stress, disrupts normal nerve...

The goal of this protocol is to photochemically induce ischemic injury to the posterior optic nerve in rat. This model is critical to studies of the pathophysiology of posterior ischemic optic neuropathy, and therapeutic approaches for this and other optic neuropathies, as well as of other CNS ischemic diseases.
