Secondary Infusion

Secondary infusion is a clinical intravenous delivery method that administers a medication or fluid through an established primary IV line, often for intermittent treatment. The secondary solution connects to the primary tubing through a Y-site and is positioned higher than the primary container, allowing hydrostatic pressure to drive the prescribed volume into the patient while temporarily displacing flow from the primary solution. Clinicians use secondary infusions to deliver antibiotics, electrolytes, and other compatible therapies at controlled rates without establishing a separate venous access site. Correct preparation, solution compatibility, pump settings, line priming, and monitoring help reduce dosing errors, contamination, and infusion-related complications.

Secondary Healthcare System

2023

Secondary healthcare is offered by a specialist, generally in hospitals or clinics for patients referred by primary healthcare providers. It occurs when a person has an illness or injury that requires specific medical care. Secondary care is often referred to as acute care. Secondary care can range from uncomplicated care to repair a minor laceration or treat a strep throat infection to more complicated emergent care, such as treating a head injury sustained in an automobile accident. Whatever...
