Foam Inserts

Foam inserts are lightweight components placed inside products, packages, or structures to provide cushioning, support, insulation, or controlled deformation. Their performance depends on the cellular material compressing under load, dissipating mechanical energy through cell-wall bending, buckling, and recovery, while density, geometry, and foam type influence stiffness and resilience. In engineering, foam inserts protect sensitive equipment from shock and vibration, maintain spacing between components, improve ergonomic comfort, and enhance thermal or acoustic insulation. Designers select and shape inserts according to expected loads, environmental conditions, and manufacturing constraints, making them useful in packaging, transportation, automotive systems, protective equipment, and structural applications.

This study presents a methodology to prepare 3D, biodegradable, foam-like cell scaffolds based on biocompatible side-chain liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). Confocal microscopy experiments show that foam-like LCEs allow for cell attachment, proliferation, and the spontaneous alignment of C2C12s myoblasts.
