Heterostructure Assembly

Heterostructure assembly is the construction of layered structures from two or more dissimilar materials, enabling engineers to combine their properties within a single device or system. It works by forming controlled interfaces through methods such as epitaxial growth, thin-film deposition, wafer bonding, or material transfer, with layer thickness, alignment, and lattice compatibility influencing performance. These engineered interfaces can modify carrier transport, light absorption, thermal behavior, or mechanical response. Heterostructure assembly therefore supports advanced applications including semiconductor devices, optoelectronics, sensors, energy technologies, and nanoscale systems, while providing a foundation for designing materials with functions unavailable in their individual components.

Assembly of a Reflux System for Heated Chemical Reactions

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Philip Miller — Imperial College London Many chemical experiments require elevated temperatures before any reaction is observed, however heating solutions of reactants can lead to loss of reactants and/or solvent via evaporation if their boiling points are sufficiently low. In order to ensure no loss of reactants or solvent, a reflux system is used in order to condense any vapors produced on heating and return these condensates to the reaction...

Synthesis of Hierarchical ZnO/CdSSe Heterostructure Nanotrees

2016

Here, we prepare and characterize novel tree-like hierarchical ZnO/CdSSe nanostructures, where CdSSe branches are grown on vertically aligned ZnO nanowires. The resulting nanotrees are a potential material for solar energy conversion and other opto-electronic devices.

One-step fabrication method for obtaining freestanding epitaxial double heterostructure is presented. This approach could achieve ZnO coverage with a higher number density than that of the epitaxial single heterostructure, leading to a piezoelectric nanogenerator with an increased output electrical performance.

Protein Complex Assembly

2020

Proteins can form homomeric complexes with another unit of the same protein or heteromeric complexes with different types. Most protein complexes self-assemble spontaneously via ordered pathways, while some proteins need assembly factors that guide their proper assembly. Despite the crowded intracellular environment, proteins usually interact with their correct partners and form functional complexes. Many viruses self-assemble into a fully functional unit using the infected host cell to...
