Hydrophilic Functionalization

Hydrophilic functionalization is the modification of a material’s surface or structure to increase its affinity for water, an important strategy for controlling wettability and interfacial behavior in engineering. It works by introducing polar or charged chemical groups, applying hydrophilic coatings, or altering surface morphology so water spreads more readily, forms stronger interactions, and can reduce nonspecific adsorption. These changes support applications in biomaterials, microfluidics, filtration membranes, sensors, and fluid-handling devices, where improved wetting can enhance biocompatibility, liquid transport, fouling resistance, and measurement reliability. Hydrophilic functionalization therefore links surface chemistry with practical control over how engineered materials interact with aqueous environments.

A Protocol for the Production of Gliadin-cyanoacrylate Nanoparticles for Hydrophilic Coating

2016

This article presents a protocol for the production of protein-based nanoparticles that changes the hydrophobic surface to hydrophilic. The produced nanoparticle is an assembly of gliadin-cyanoacrylate diblock copolymers. Spray coating with the produced nanoparticle changes the surface of target material to a hydrophilic surface.

We present a protocol to synthesize Janus microhydrogels composed entirely of the same base material, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm), with a clearly compartmentalized structure base on the phase separation of a supersaturated NIPAAm monomer solution. The synthesized Janus microhydrogels show unique properties such as anisotropic thermo-responsiveness and organophilic/hydrophilic loading capability.

This study describes classical hydration using the thin lipid film method for nanoliposome preparation followed by nanoparticle characterization. A 47 kDa-hydrophilic and globular protein, tarin, is successfully encapsulated as a strategy to improve stability, avoid fast clearance, and promote controlled release. The method can be adapted to hydrophobic molecules encapsulation.
