Image Noise

Image noise is unwanted random or structured variation in pixel intensity that obscures true scene information and limits image quality. It arises when sensors, electronics, transmission channels, or environmental conditions introduce fluctuations, such as photon noise from limited light, read noise from detector electronics, or interference during acquisition; its pattern and strength depend on the imaging system and operating conditions. Engineering workflows characterize noise using measures such as signal-to-noise ratio and reduce it through calibration, filtering, denoising algorithms, or improved hardware. Effective noise management preserves edges and fine detail, strengthening imaging performance in scientific instruments, machine vision, medical systems, and remote sensing.

2013

A methodology for preparing solid-state nanopores in solution for biomolecular translocation experiments is presented. By applying short pulses of high electric fields, the nanopore diameter can be controllably enlarged with subnanometer precision and its electrical noise characteristics significantly improved. This procedure is performed in situ using standard laboratory equipment under experimental conditions.
