Knife-edge Alignment

Knife-edge alignment is an optical technique for locating and centering a laser beam or determining its focal position with high precision. A sharp edge is translated across the beam while a detector records the transmitted power; the resulting intensity transition identifies the beam center, and measurements taken through focus can characterize beam size and waist location. In engineering, this method supports alignment of lenses, mirrors, apertures, and optical systems, particularly when direct imaging is difficult. Its simple hardware, quantitative output, and compatibility with automated stages make it useful for laser characterization, precision positioning, and optical system calibration.

Design Example: Alignment of a Road Line Using GIS

2025

The alignment of a road line using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a critical process in civil engineering, combining advanced technology with practical decision-making. This methodology begins with the collection of geospatial data, including information on land cover, geomorphology, drainage patterns, slope, and contour details. Such data is typically acquired through satellite imagery and GIS tools, offering a comprehensive understanding of the terrain.Once the data is gathered, it...
