Transmission Spectroscopy Analysis

Transmission spectroscopy analysis is the measurement and interpretation of how much electromagnetic radiation passes through a material across selected wavelengths, revealing its optical and chemical properties. A spectrometer compares incident and transmitted intensity to calculate transmittance or absorbance; under suitable conditions, the Beer–Lambert law relates absorbance to concentration, path length, and attenuation by the sample. In engineering, this analysis supports characterization of thin films, polymers, glass, coatings, semiconductors, and gases by identifying absorption bands, estimating material composition, and evaluating optical performance. It also helps researchers monitor fabrication processes, assess defects, and design components for sensing, photonics, energy, and communications applications.

Raman Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Ryoichi Ishihara — Delft University of Technology Raman spectroscopy is a technique for analyzing vibrational and other low frequency modes in a system. In chemistry it is used to identify molecules by their Raman fingerprint. In solid-state physics it is used to characterize materials, and more specifically to investigate their crystal structure or crystallinity. Compared to other techniques for investigating the crystal structure (e.g. transmission electron...

Lead Analysis of Soil Using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Lead occurs naturally in soil, in levels ranging from 10-50 ppm. However, with the widespread use of lead in paint and gasoline in addition to contamination by industry, urban soils often have concentrations of lead significantly greater than background levels – up to 10,000 ppm in some places. Ongoing problems arise from the fact that lead does not biodegrade, and instead remains in the soil. Serious health risks...

Source: Lutz, D., et.al. Assessment of Ultrastructural Neuroplasticity Parameters After In Utero Transduction of the Developing Mouse Brain and Spinal Cord. J. Vis. Exp. (2019).This video demonstrates the preparation and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of a brain section from a mouse pup. The protocol starts with osmium tetroxide-fixed tissue embedded in resin, followed by precise trimming to isolate the region of interest and ultramicrotomy to produce semithin and ultrathin...

Mössbauer Spectroscopy

Source: Joshua Wofford, Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University Mössbauer spectroscopy is a bulk characterization technique that examines the nuclear excitation of an atom by gamma rays in the solid state. The resulting Mössbauer spectrum provides information about the oxidation state, spin state, and electronic environment around the target atom, which, in combination, gives evidence about the electronic structure and ligand arrangement (geometry) of the molecule.

Design of Transmission Shafts - Stress Analysis

2024

Designing a transmission shaft requires a thorough understanding of the stresses induced by bending moments and torques, especially in systems where power is transferred through gears. These forces create force-couple systems at the centers of the shaft's cross-sections, leading to both transverse and torsional loading. Although shearing stresses from transverse loads are typically smaller than those from torques and are often overlooked, the significant normal stresses from these loads...
