Otolith Extraction For Aging

Otolith extraction for aging is a technique used to remove and examine the calcified ear stones of fish, which preserve growth records throughout an individual's life. Researchers access the otoliths from the inner ear, clean and prepare them by sectioning or polishing, then examine growth increments under magnification to estimate age and reconstruct patterns of development. In environmental science, otolith age data support assessments of fish populations, growth rates, mortality, recruitment, and responses to habitat conditions or climate variability. These measurements strengthen fisheries management and help reveal how environmental change influences aquatic communities.
