Cambial Window Inoculation

Cambial window inoculation is a plant inoculation technique that exposes the vascular cambium through a small opening in the bark, allowing researchers to introduce a pathogen or biological sample directly into living tissue. Removing the bark creates access to the cambial region, where the applied inoculum contacts actively dividing cells and adjacent vascular tissues under controlled conditions. In genetics, this method helps compare genotype-specific responses, including susceptibility, resistance, lesion development, and pathogen movement. It is particularly useful for studying host-pathogen interactions in woody plants and for evaluating inherited traits that influence disease progression.
