Blood Processing Laboratory

A blood processing laboratory is a specialized facility where blood and its components are collected, separated, preserved, and prepared for diagnostic or research use. Processing typically involves centrifugation to separate plasma, serum, red blood cells, and leukocyte-rich fractions, followed by controlled storage that helps maintain sample integrity. In immunology and infection research, these specimens provide sources of antibodies, immune cells, nucleic acids, and other biomarkers used to study host responses and pathogen-associated changes. Standardized handling, labeling, and biosafety procedures reduce contamination and variability, improving the reliability of serological testing, cellular assays, molecular analyses, and clinical investigations.

The preparing and processing of dried blood spots (DBS) for their final analysis are still poorly standardized for most diagnostic applications. To overcome this shortcoming, a comprehensive step-by-step protocol is suggested and subsequently evaluated with regard to its effectiveness for detecting markers of viral infections.
