Hemolymph Circulation

Hemolymph circulation is the movement of hemolymph, the internal fluid of arthropods and many other invertebrates, through an open circulatory system that supports transport and defense. A dorsal vessel pumps hemolymph forward and draws it back through valved openings called ostia; it then flows through the body cavity, bathing organs before returning to the vessel. This circulation distributes nutrients, hormones, oxygen in some species, hemocytes, and soluble immune factors that recognize and respond to invading microbes. In immunology and infection research, it provides a framework for studying systemic immune surveillance, hemocyte recruitment, clotting, melanization, and pathogen spread in insect and invertebrate models.

Cuticle Disruption: A Method to Collect Hemolymph from Drosophila Larvae

2023

The Drosophila hemolymph serves as both blood and interstitial fluid, circulating throughout the body during the larva and adult stages. This video describes a protocol to collect larval hemolymph in order to quantify the circulating cells.

Insulin Injection and Hemolymph Extraction to Measure Insulin Sensitivity in Adult Drosophila melanogaster

Conserved insulin signaling pathways found in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster make this organism a potential tool for modeling metabolic disorders including type II diabetes. To this end, it is critical to establish physiological assays to effectively measure systemic insulin action in peripheral glucose disposal in the adult fly.

Fetal Circulation

Fetal circulation is a unique system that facilitates the exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste products between the developing fetus and the mother. This intricate process takes place through a special organ called the placenta. Two umbilical arteries transport blood from the fetus to the placenta. At the placenta, the blood absorbs oxygen and nutrients while simultaneously eliminating waste products. This oxygen-enriched and nutrient-rich blood then returns to the fetus through one...
