Intra-esophageal Gavage

Intra-esophageal gavage is a controlled method for delivering liquids directly into the esophagus, enabling precise oral administration in laboratory animals and supporting reproducible studies of gastrointestinal and mucosal immunity. A flexible feeding needle or catheter is guided through the mouth into the esophagus, where a measured dose passes into the stomach and intestinal tract rather than relying on voluntary ingestion. In immunology and infection research, this approach can administer pathogens, antigens, microbial communities, or experimental compounds to evaluate host defense, inflammation, vaccine responses, and disease progression. Consistent dosing and careful technique improve experimental control while reducing variability between animals.

The increasing use of zebrafish as an animal model requires the development of effective methods for the delivery of known quantities of compounds and solutions. The gavage procedure described below allows for the oral delivery of precise volumes of solution reliably, safely and efficiently to adult zebrafish.

Parkinson's disease has been related to the exposure to pesticides. Here we show a method to deliver pesticides using a gastric tube at the desired concentration and a method to analyze their effect in alpha-synuclein accumulation in the enteric nervous system.

An Intragastric Gavage Technique for Controlled Helicobacter Infection in Mice

2025

This video demonstrates the establishment of Helicobacter pylori infection through the intragastric gavage technique in a mouse model. The bacterial suspension is administered via a catheter inserted through the mouth into the stomach. Inoculated bacteria colonize and establish an infection in the stomach, which can be used to study the host-pathogen interaction.
