Kidney Digestion

Kidney digestion is not a standard biological process in which the kidneys chemically break down food or other nutrients; the term may reflect confusion between renal function and gastrointestinal digestion. Kidneys instead remove metabolic waste from blood through glomerular filtration, then modify the filtrate by tubular reabsorption and secretion to produce urine. In immunology and infection research, this distinction matters because renal inflammation, immune complex deposition, and pathogen-associated injury can disrupt filtration and cause kidney disease, while digestive mechanisms belong primarily to the gastrointestinal tract.

Restriction Enzyme Digests

2023

Restriction enzymes or endonucleases recognize and cut DNA at a specific sequence. These enzymes occur naturally in bacteria as a defense against bacteriophages - viruses that infect bacteria. Bacterial restriction enzymes cut the invading bacteriophage DNA while leaving the bacterial genomic DNA unharmed due to addition of methyl groups. This video explains the basic principles of restriction enzymes including: how restriction enzymes are named and the types of recognition sites and...

Kidney Structure

The kidneys are two large bean-shaped organs located in the upper abdomen. They filter the blood several times a day to remove toxins and rebalance water and electrolytes of the circulatory system via the renal veins. The kidneys receive blood directly from the heart via the renal arteries. These arteries enter the kidney at the hilum, the concave surface of the bean, where they branch and divide into smaller vessels and capillaries. The renal cortex is the thick outer layer of the kidney. It...

DNabT cells are rare among peripheral T cells; however, they are abundant in certain non-lymphoid tissues. Difficulty of isolating DN T cells from non-lymphoid tissue hinders their functional analysis despite increasing recognized pathophysiologic significance. We describe a novel protocol for isolation of highly purified DN T cells from murine kidney.
