Murine Candidiasis Model

The murine candidiasis model is an in vivo experimental system that uses mice to study infection caused by Candida species and the host responses that determine disease severity. Researchers introduce Candida under controlled conditions and assess how fungal growth, tissue dissemination, innate immune defenses, and inflammatory signaling shape infection, often by measuring survival, organ fungal burden, and histopathology. This model helps clarify interactions between fungal pathogens and immune cells such as neutrophils and macrophages. It also supports evaluation of antifungal therapies, vaccine strategies, and immune-modulating interventions, linking mechanistic immunology with potential approaches to prevent or treat invasive candidiasis.

Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by opportunistic species of Candida. It can affect various anatomical sites, including the skin, oral cavity, nails, and genitourinary tract. Among its forms, vaginal candidiasis is the most common type of mucosal infection. It typically results from the overgrowth of Candida albicans in the vaginal mucosa. Under normal conditions, C. albicans exists as a commensal organism within the vaginal microbiota, regulated by the dominance of lactobacilli, which...

Although Candida infection models are available to study host immune resistance, a model to study T cell mediated immunopathology in the context of Candida infection is absent. Here we describe a method to establish Th17 immunopathology associated with oral Candida infection in immunodeficient mice.

In vivo spatio-temporal interactions of pathogen and immune defenses at the mucosal level are not easily imaged in existing vertebrate hosts. The method presented here describes a versatile platform to study mucosal candidiasis in live vertebrates using the swimbladder of the juvenile zebrafish as an infection site.
