Tear Sample Collection

Tear sample collection is the controlled acquisition of tear fluid from the ocular surface for laboratory analysis, providing a minimally invasive window into local immunity, inflammation, and infection. Researchers collect basal or reflex tears using methods such as absorbent strips or microcapillary tubes, then recover soluble proteins, antibodies, cytokines, microbial components, or nucleic acids for testing. Careful control of the collection site, stimulation, handling, and storage helps preserve analytes and limit contamination. In immunology and infection research, tear samples support biomarker identification, pathogen detection, disease monitoring, and evaluation of host responses to ocular or systemic conditions.
