Adjunctive Treatment

Adjunctive treatment is an additional intervention used alongside a primary therapy to address aspects of a disease that the main treatment may not fully control. Rather than replacing the principal treatment, it works through a complementary mechanism, such as reducing symptoms, targeting a separate disease pathway, preventing complications, or supporting adherence and recovery. In medicine, adjunctive treatments can include medications, procedures, rehabilitation, behavioral interventions, or supportive care, selected according to the condition, treatment goals, and patient factors. Their use may improve overall disease management, but clinicians must evaluate evidence, interactions, risks, and whether the combined approach provides meaningful benefit.

2014

Pneumonia is one of the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S. Osteopathic manipulative techniques (OMT) may be utilized as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of pneumonia to enhance biomechanical and immune function; and ultimately, to reduce hospital stay, duration of antibiotics, incidence of respiratory failure, and mortality. In this video-article, we will review randomized controlled studies on the use of OMT in pneumonia patients, as well as demonstrate specific hands-on...
