Disease Activity Assessment

Disease activity assessment is the systematic evaluation of how actively a disease is affecting a patient at a given time, supporting diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment decisions. Clinicians combine symptoms, physical findings, laboratory biomarkers, imaging results, and disease-specific scoring systems to quantify current activity and distinguish it from lasting damage or disability. In medicine, repeated assessments can reveal progression, remission, or response to therapy, while helping guide adjustments in care. Standardized measures also improve communication among healthcare teams, enable consistent outcome reporting in clinical research, and support comparisons of treatment effectiveness across patient populations.

In Parkinson's disease and movement disorders in general, sensitive and reliable behavioral assays are essential for testing novel potential therapeutics. Here, we describe a manageable battery of sensorimotor tests for mice that are sensitive to varying degrees of injury to the nigrostriatal system and useful for preclinical studies.

This video demonstrates the assessment of multiple caspase activations in bone marrow-derived macrophages through stimulation with the influenza virus. Following macrophage lysis, heat-inactivation of lysate, and centrifugation, intracellular caspases are collected for subsequent immunological analysis.
