Human Kidney Cortex

The human kidney cortex is the kidney’s outer region, containing renal corpuscles, proximal and distal convoluted tubules, and blood vessels that support filtration and urine formation. Blood enters glomerular capillaries, where hydrostatic pressure filters water and small solutes into Bowman’s capsule; tubular cells then selectively reabsorb needed substances and secrete waste as filtrate passes through the nephron. In medicine, the cortex is evaluated through imaging, laboratory testing, and kidney biopsy to assess conditions such as glomerular disease, inflammation, ischemia, and chronic kidney injury. Understanding its organization helps connect microscopic damage with changes in renal function and patient outcomes.

2018

Here we present a protocol to fabricate a kidney cortex extracellular matrix-derived hydrogel to retain the native kidney extracellular matrix (ECM) structural and biochemical composition. The fabrication process and its applications are described. Finally, a perspective on using this hydrogel to support kidney-specific cellular and tissue regeneration and bioengineering is discussed.

Kidney Structure

The kidneys are two large bean-shaped organs located in the upper abdomen. They filter the blood several times a day to remove toxins and rebalance water and electrolytes of the circulatory system via the renal veins. The kidneys receive blood directly from the heart via the renal arteries. These arteries enter the kidney at the hilum, the concave surface of the bean, where they branch and divide into smaller vessels and capillaries. The renal cortex is the thick outer layer of the kidney. It...
