Permanent Implantation Surgery

Permanent implantation surgery is a medical procedure that places a device, prosthesis, or other biocompatible material inside the body for long-term therapeutic or functional support. Surgeons create a controlled operative pathway, position the implant at the intended anatomical site, and secure it while maintaining sterile conditions; healing may stabilize the implant through tissue integration or a fibrous capsule. Applications include structural replacement, restoration of bodily function, and delivery or support systems that require durable placement. Successful implantation depends on appropriate device selection, precise surgical technique, biocompatibility, and monitoring for complications such as infection, displacement, or tissue reactions.

Implantation Protocol of the Foldable Capsular Vitreous Body for Complex Vitreoretinal Surgery

2026

The Foldable Capsular Vitreous Body (FCVB) is an intraocular implant that encapsulates silicone oil within a flexible capsule to reduce silicone oil-related complications. This protocol describes the surgical implantation of the FCVB via scleral incision for the treatment of complex retinal detachment and ocular trauma.

The Application Of Permanent Middle Cerebral Artery Ligation in the Mouse

Middle cerebral artery (MCA) ligation is a technique to study focal cerebral ischemia in animal models. In this method, the middle cerebral artery is exposed by craniotomy and ligated by cauterization. This method gives highly reproducible infarct volumes and increased post-operative survival rates compared to other methods available.

We describe a highly reproducible method for the permanent occlusion of a rodent major cerebral blood vessel. This technique can be accomplished with very little peripheral damage, minimal blood loss, a high rate of long-term survival, and consistent infarct volume commensurate with the human clinical population.

Various murine models of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) are widely used in experimental brain research. Here, we demonstrate the model of transcranial permanent distal MCAO which produces consistent cortical infarction of a size corresponding to damage imposed by the majority of human ischemic strokes.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals1 dictates that rodent survival surgery be performed aseptically. Aseptic technique utilizes specific practices that minimize the contamination of the surgical site, including patient preparation, surgeon preparation, sterilization of instruments and other supplies, and the use of a clean and controlled environment. Presurgical planning,...
