Renal Transplantation

Renal transplantation is the surgical replacement of a failing kidney with a functioning kidney from a living or deceased donor, offering an established treatment for end-stage kidney disease. The transplanted kidney is connected to the recipient’s blood vessels and urinary tract, then monitored as immunosuppressive medicines reduce immune recognition and rejection of donor tissue. Careful donor–recipient matching, infection prevention, and long-term assessment of kidney function support graft survival and patient health. Renal transplantation can improve quality of life and reduce dependence on dialysis, while ongoing research aims to limit rejection, expand donor options, and improve outcomes.

The rat orthotopic renal transplantation model contributes to investigating the mechanism of renal allograft rejection. The current model increases the recipients' survival without interference with blood supply and venous reflux of the lower body using an end-to-end anastomosis of kidney implantation and an end-to-side "tunnel" method of ureter-bladder anastomosis.
