Shear Wave Elastography

Shear Wave Elastography is an ultrasound-based imaging technique that measures tissue mechanical stiffness noninvasively, helping clinicians and researchers assess changes that conventional imaging may not show. It uses focused acoustic radiation force to generate transverse shear waves within tissue, while ultrafast ultrasound tracks their propagation; faster wave speeds generally indicate stiffer tissue. In medicine, the method supports evaluation of liver fibrosis, breast and thyroid lesions, musculoskeletal disorders, and vascular or cardiac tissue. By providing quantitative stiffness maps in real time, shear wave elastography can complement physical examination and structural ultrasound, guide diagnosis, monitor treatment response, and reduce reliance on invasive sampling in selected settings.
