Lymphedema Status

Lymphedema status describes whether lymphedema is present and the extent, severity, or current control of lymphatic swelling, a clinically important issue in medicine. When lymphatic vessels or nodes cannot adequately transport fluid, protein-rich lymph accumulates in tissues, promoting persistent edema, inflammation, skin changes, and, over time, fibrosis. Clinicians assess limb size, tissue consistency, symptoms, skin integrity, and functional effects to characterize status and monitor change. This assessment supports early recognition, treatment planning, and follow-up for approaches such as compression, exercise, skin care, and specialized lymphatic therapy, while helping evaluate progression, response to treatment, and risk of complications.
