Submucosal Masses

Submucosal masses are localized lesions arising beneath the mucosal lining of a hollow organ, often appearing as smooth bulges while the surface remains intact. They develop from the submucosa or deeper layers of the organ wall and can represent benign growths, cysts, vascular lesions, or neoplasms; endoscopy shows their shape, while endoscopic ultrasonography helps identify the wall layer of origin and internal characteristics. In medicine, evaluating these masses supports differential diagnosis, risk assessment, and treatment planning. Findings such as size, growth pattern, symptoms, and tissue features guide decisions about surveillance, tissue sampling, endoscopic removal, or surgery.

Here we demonstrate our protocol for isolation of basal and submucosal gland duct cells from mouse tracheas. We also demonstrate the method of injecting stem cells into the dorsal mouse fat pad to create an in vivo model of submucosal gland regeneration.

Lipid droplets are important organelles for the replication of several pathogens, including the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). We describe a method to isolate lipid droplets for quantitative mass spectrometry of associated proteins; it can be used under a variety of conditions, such as virus infection, environmental stress, or drug treatment.

Atomic Mass

2020

Atoms — and the protons, neutrons, and electrons that compose them — are extremely small. For example, a carbon atom weighs less than 2 × 10−23 g. When describing the properties of tiny objects such as atoms, we use appropriately small units of measure, such as the atomic mass unit (amu). The amu was originally defined based on hydrogen, the lightest element, then later in terms of oxygen. Since 1961, it has been defined with regard to the most abundant isotope of carbon, atoms of which are...
