Vitreous Collagen Network

The vitreous collagen network is a three-dimensional framework of collagen fibrils within the eye’s vitreous humor that helps maintain its gel-like structure, transparency, and mechanical support for the retina. Primarily composed of type II collagen, with associated types IX and V/XI, the fibrils interact with hyaluronan and other matrix components to organize water and resist deformation while allowing light transmission. Age-related remodeling, liquefaction, or disruption of this network can contribute to vitreous detachment, floaters, and retinal complications. Studying its structure and biomechanics supports clinical understanding of ocular aging, posterior vitreous detachment, retinal tears, and vitreoretinal disease.

2023

Collagen is another widely used biomaterial that has found popularity in commercial applications, such as photography. Collagen has more recently been used in tissue engineering applications, by creating hydrogels that provide structure to engineered tissue. This video introduces collagen as a biomaterial, demonstrates how it is harvested from porcine skin, and shows how the material is used to create a hydrogel for tissue engineering applications. Finally, several applications of the material...
