Animal Surgery Technique

Animal surgery techniques are controlled procedures used to access, alter, or repair tissues in living animals while minimizing pain, infection, and physiological disturbance. They rely on anesthesia, aseptic preparation, careful tissue handling, hemostasis, and appropriate wound closure, with instruments and surgical steps adapted to the species and target anatomy. In neuroscience, these techniques support stereotaxic procedures, cranial access, neural recording, stimulation, and tissue sampling, enabling researchers to investigate brain structure and function in vivo. Rigorous surgical practice improves animal welfare, experimental reproducibility, and the validity of behavioral and physiological measurements.

Stereotaxic surgery on rodents allows for targeted administration of drugs or electrical stimulation and recordings in awake, behaving animals. In this video presentation we will demonstrate recent procedural refinements to this long-standing procedure that successfully improved survival rate and reduced post-surgical weight loss.

The ability of metastatic clones to colonize distant sites depends on their proliferation capacity and/or their ability to survive in the host microenvironment without significant proliferation. Here, we present an animal model that allows quantitative visualization of both types of liver colonization by metastatic clones.

University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals1 dictates that rodent survival surgery be performed aseptically. Aseptic technique utilizes specific practices that minimize the contamination of the surgical site, including patient preparation, surgeon preparation, sterilization of instruments and other supplies, and the use of a clean and controlled environment.
